Equident™
Equident™ nutritional
supplement is a new approach to promoting healthy teeth and gums – an
important part of a horse's overall health. An all natural, organic blend
of whole mushrooms, Equident™ provides a wide variety of health benefits.
Mushrooms are uniquely designed organisms that contain many nutrients and
bioactive substances that help horses – and humans – maintain
more normal immune and cellular function. Mushrooms have evolved over millions
of years and have developed a perfectly-balanced bioactive system that contains
approximately 4,000 enzymes, proteins and nutrients that can assist humans
and animals to adapt to everyday stresses.
Dangers
of Gum Disease in Horses
Tooth decay and gum disease are much more prevalent
than many horse owners realize. When a horse’s teeth are misaligned, spaces open between
them allowing food particles to become trapped between teeth. When
these food particles ferment, they release bacteria that attack the periodontal
supporting structures.
Unhealthy teeth and gums often go unnoticed and
the leading cause of tooth loss in the horse is periodontal disease. The
gums are the supporting tissue and when this supporting structure depletes,
it is inevitably followed by tooth loss.
Gum disease is a form of inflammation and infection
that occurs in the animal’s
mouth. Gingivitis is an early phase of gum disease that is an inflammatory
response within the gum caused by the accumulation of plaque-a soft, sticky
colorless film of bacteria above the gum line.

Signs of an Unhealthy Mouth
Equine dental practitioners estimate
that 90-95 percent of horses will develop some form of gum disease in their
lifetimes. To
protect your horse, learn to look for the signs of dental distress.
- Raise your horse’s lip and take a look. The gums should be
pink in color and appear well attached to the teeth. There should
be no food or spaces between them.
- Other signs of dental problems include: a foul breath, weight loss, head
tossing and tilting of the head when chewing, discomfort with the bit such
as tilting the head when ridden, facial swelling, dropping grain when eating,
quidding, refusal to take a lead, dunking food in water before eating it
and large pieces of undigested food in the manure.
Ingredients
Equident is a proprietary blend
of four medicinal mushrooms, each of which plays and important role in
promoting healthy gums. Equident is a holistic
natural approach to health care that helps prevent gum disease by working
through the system of the horse. Healthy tissue in the mouth is a reflection
of the health status of the entire body of the horse. The four medicinal
mushrooms in Equident work in harmony to promote good health through good
nutrition.
- One mushroom helps increase
the body’s
ability to use oxygen efficiently and to deliver that oxygen throughout
the body, including to peripheral gum tissue.
- The second mushroom helps speed
up the healing of wounds, including wounds in the mouth. Research
indicates that the wound healing time can decrease by 60 percent.
- The third mushroom contains small, organic anti-bacterial chemicals that
help kill the bacteria that can lead to gum disease. This mushroom also
aids in regulating the body's inflammatory response to such threats as
injury, bacteria and viruses. This response is characterized by pain, swelling,
redness, and heat. While a necessary part of healing, inflammation can
create its own problems when unchecked. This mushroom actually works to
stimulate an inflammatory response to attack a threat to the body and then
to reduce inflammation before the inflammation itself becomes a threat.
- The fourth mushroom contains a multitude of nutrients
that counter the oxidative stresses that result in illness and disease.
One essential potent nutrient is L-Ergothioneine, a primary anti-oxidative
stress molecule, only found in fungi. This mushroom also works to
and protects against bone-stimulate bone growth destroying cells.
