Team Matrix Member Will Simpson Brings Home Olympic Gold
Team Matrix member Will Simpson now has an Olympic Gold Medal to add to his
collection of ribbons and trophies from his show jumping career. Simpson, riding
Carlsson Vom Dach, helped America's Olympic Show Jumping Team win the Gold
after a tough jump-off against the Canadian team. Norway took the Bronze Medal.
In addition to Simpson, the American Show Jumping Team includes McLain Ward,
Laura Kraut and Beezie Madden. In the team competition, the first round ended
with the U.S. tied with Switzerland and the Canadians sat in fourth place.
However, by the final round, the Canadians stood tied with the Americans and
the Canadians were down one horse due to injury, leaving them with no drop
score going up against the U.S. Anchoring the Canadian team was veteran rider
Ian Miller, 61, who has ridden in nine Olympic Games. The tie between the U.S.
and Canada was broken by a timed jump-off, which gave the Americans the Gold.
"This is exciting," said Matrix Vice President Keith Manfred. "The
Mushroom Matrix is a relatively new company and it has only been in the past
year that we have developed our Team Matrix. And yet, in that short period
of time, the Matrix has attracted the support of many of America's leading
riders and trainers and our team members have achieved much success this year."
Simpson isn't the only Team Matrix member competing in the 2008 Olympics.
Matrix Team member Steffen Peters is a member of the U.S. Olympic Dressage
Team and is the highest-placed American rider in dressage competition.
Simpson, based in Thousand Oaks, California, has been one of America’s
most successful show jumpers for the past two decades. This year's Olympic
Games is not his only time representing the U.S. in international competition. In
2003, Simpson made U.S. show jumping history when he rode for the U.S. in the
Show Jumping World Cup on the same team with his wife, Nicole Shahinian-Simpson.
